DUI Collision causes fire and destruction of Vehicle – Charges Pending

On January 13, 2021, around 7:15 PM, deputies were dispatched to a single vehicle collision on Campwood Road off Williamson Valley Road, outside of Prescott, Arizona. Upon arrival, deputies found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames with some associated spot fires nearby. Witnesses approached and indicated they found the vehicle on fire with the driver still in the driver’s seat and a portion of her pants burning. They pulled her away and took her to the side of the road. Witnesses indicated she seemed intoxicated.

The deputy spoke with the driver, a 63-year-old female resident of Prescott. Her speech was slurred, she had a hard time moving and was unable to recall what just happened. Williamson Valley Fire personnel arrived and extinguished the fires. While medical personnel treated the driver, she admitted to having ‘a lot to drink earlier.’ She was transported to a Prescott hospital for treatment. The deputy followed up at the hospital and obtained a blood sample for testing. Those results are pending to determine the cause of her apparent intoxication.

Deputies initiated an on-scene investigation and established the vehicle’s course of travel off the roadway after it struck a concrete delineator positioned near a cattle guard. The cause of the fire is unknown currently. The efforts of the witnesses to aid her are commended.

The Sheriff’s Office intends to charge the driver with DUI pending blood test results and completion of the collision investigation.
