Tell Mama…Janis is Coming To Town

19 September 2019

The Summer of Love’s 50th anniversary may be winding down, but things will still be rocking at the Elks Theatre on Saturday, September 21 when  A Piece of My Heart: The Music of Janis Joplin takes the stage.

Starring Katherine Byrnes, who recently graced the Elks stage in The Tapestry Album Live on Stage, the concert pays homage to the noted 60s blues/pop icon as well as some of her contemporaries (Jefferson Airplane, The Band, Kris Kristofferson, and Jimi Hendrix – to name a few). Joining Byrnes on stage are Petie Ronstadt (bass and vocals), Paul Jenkins (keyboard and vocals), Paul Gibson (drums) and Ben Nesbit (guitar and vocals).  A Piece of My Heart  is presented by Khris Dodge Entertainment.

“To sing two hours of Janis Joplin, for any singer, would be murder on your voice because the songs are so insanely big,” says Byrnes, who created the show. “Janis worked with so many dynamic people – Kris Kristofferson who wrote Me and Bobby McGee, for instance – that it seemed natural to include them in the show.”

One major influence that both Joplin and Byrnes share is blues artist Bessie Smith. “I wanted to show how important blues was to Janis. At one point in the show, we take the classic Gershwin song Summertime and start it off the way Bessie Smith sang it, but then morph into the way that Janis performed it.”

As Byrnes puts it, “The show is a mountain to climb. Janis threw herself into every single performance because her songs were so emotional. And that’s how I approach them, too. At the end of every show, I find myself emotionally depleted but it’s cathartic because I feel like I’ve given everything I have.”

A Piece of My Heart: The Music of Janis Joplin is produced by Khris Dodge Entertainment. Tickets for the concert are available by calling 928-777-1370 or by going to Ticket prices range from $22-30.
