It’s just a bag for some Tostitos tortilla chips, right? Not so fast. What if it’s more than a simple bag?
“Introducing the first bag of chips that helps you get a safe ride on the day of the big game."
Saying they want to make sure football fans get home safely, Tostitos is partnering with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to offer a high-tech Tostitos chip bag that can tell when you've been drinking.
According to Adweek.com, it’s a limited-edition “Party Safe” bag that can recognize if someone has been drinking alcohol. The bag starts out with a green circle and a small sensor on the front. Breathe into the sensor and it can detect small traces of alcohol. If alcohol is detected, the green circle turns into a red steering wheel, displays an Uber code and a “Don’t drink and Drive” message.
Type in the Uber code into a smart phone, and receive a $10 coupon for your ride.
“We want football fans to get home safe,” is the statement on the Tostitos website page. “Together with MADD we’re giving away 25,000 Uber rides all across America.”
In 2015, 45 people were killed in drunk driving crashes on Super Bowl Sunday. Frito-Lay, the makers of Tostitos, hopes they can help prevent that. “Our goal is to remove 25,000 cars from the roads that Sunday evening,” Jennifer Saenz, Frito Lay’s chief marketing officer said. “Whether watching the big game at a friend’s house or at a local bar, a safe ride home is just a few easy taps away.”
Delanie Walker, currently a Tennessee Titans tight end and a MADD volunteer, personally knows the tragedy of drunk driving. Walker was on the San Francisco 49ers team in 2013. Before the big game, he took a photo of himself with his aunt and uncle. A few hours later, his aunt and uncle were killed by a drunk driver. Now, between football duties, Walker makes it his mission to prevent drinking and driving.
“Having a good time and being safe go hand in hand,” Walker is quoted as saying in the Adweek article. “Drunk driving is 100 percent preventable. Thanks to Tostitos and Uber, it’s easier than ever to make a safe choice if your plans include alcohol."
The discount code is only valid on February 5th, Super Bowl Sunday.
