33% Failure in Covert Underage Alcohol Sales

16 September 2016   Cpl. T. Lawrence

Multiple law enforcement agencies combined for underage alcohol compliance check.

On Saturday, September 10, 2016 from 5:00-11:00 PM Prescott Valley Police Department partnered with MATFORCE, Chino Valley Police Department, Prescott Police Department, Yavapai College and Yavapai County Sheriff Office to host a Covert Underage Buyer (CUB) detail in western Yavapai County. Police Explorers from Prescott Valley Police Department and Prescott Police Department ages 16-19 also participated in the detail. MATFORCE assisted with a majority of the funding for this detail.

A total of forty-four (44) convenient store and grocery stores were checked in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Dewey, Humboldt, Mayer, Cordes Junction, Chino Valley, Paulden and Ash Fork.

A total of nine (9) convenient stores (20%) failed the compliance check, in which CUBs were able to purchase alcohol in these off-sale locations.

In June 2016 we conducted the same detail and were able to check twenty-seven (27) convenient stores and grocery stores with nine (9) failures (33%).

This decline in sales of alcohol shows some business owners and employees are properly trained and are vigilant to help stop the sales of alcohol to underage youths. When a store fails the compliance checks they are always offered alcohol classes for management and the employees, facilitated by Liquor Control.

These details are designed to ensure that all establishments checked are compliant with state law. The ultimate goal is that all retailers follow the rules and protocols set forth to ensure that they are not selling to underage buyers resulting in zero criminal charges.

Recent surveys indicate that the primary way young people under 21 get access to alcohol is from older friends and siblings. Parents and guardians are strongly encouraged to talk to young people about this subject. For more information on this subject you can visit

The Prescott Valley Police Department is still asking for anyone with any information about underage alcohol sales to contact an officer by phone or in person and report the incident Prescott Valley Police Department can be contacted at (928) 772-9267 for non-emergencies, 911 for emergencies.
