Opinion: Rights vs Revenue?

Remember the names of these Prescott City Councilmen and women as you may want to rethink voting for them at the next election: Mayor Gregg Mengarelli, Mayor Pro Tem Billie Orr, Steve Blair, Cathey Rusing, Alexa Scholl and Steve Sischka

On February 11, The Prescott City council heard Resolution #2020-1734 sponsored by Phil Goode and Cathey Rusing which declared Prescott to be a 2nd Amendment Sanctuary City The council did hold public comment but there was only 4 days given to consider the matter. ( (Scroll down to #10 Regular agenda to see A & B, see section 3 SECTION 3.)

A similar resolution was passed on February 5 2020 by the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors, declaring Yavapai a 2nd Amendment Sanctuary County. This received the support from Congressman Paul Gosar of Prescott. It was passed unanimously.

You would think the Council would unite with the Yavapai BOS to protect the voters of Prescott from any infringement of their 2nd Amendment rights being proposed right here in Arizona.

Ya think?

The Washington Post’s moto is “Democracy dies in Darkness”. This council is a perfect example of that because they are shadows not light.

The council decided 6-1 to table it rather than vote. This included the co-sponsor Cathey Rusing.

The Council must have watched the January 2 20202 video of the Yavapai County BOS meeting where member Tom Thurman of District 2 listed the excuses for not approving the resolution and wanted to vote on a toothless proclamation which simply said that the U.S. has a 2nd amendment and that the supervisors reaffirmed their commitment:

Excuse #1: Not liking the term sanctuary because of its negative connotation.

Excuse #2: SB 1487 which expressed concern about the loss of revenue if state law is not followed.

The other excuse expressed at this Council meeting was that we already have a 2nd amendment so this is unnecessary and the County of Yavapai is a 2nd Amendment Sanctuary County.

Sanctuary cities are cities and local governments that refuse to cooperate with those who enforce federal immigration laws. Sanctuary laws—though intended to show compassion for those here illegally—put citizens and others legally present at unnecessary risk. They wind up creating sanctuaries for criminal activity.

2nd Amendment Sanctuary cities are not breaking the law. They are simply upholding the Constitution of the U.S and the Bill of rights.

The following is from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson to James Madison on Dec 20 1787: "A bill of rights is what the people are entitled against any government on earth, general or particular, and what no government should refuse, or rest on interference."

Why is this council allowing the left to own the word?

SB 1487 does not apply to 2nd Amendment sanctuary because no laws are being broken. Prescott City Council must have been listening to the leftists who sow fear by saying cities should be subservient to the state and that the Governor will act out and attack Prescott for taking a stand supporting the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Yavapai County is a 2nd Amendment Sanctuary County but it has no jurisdiction over the Prescott Police Department. The Prescott Police, are under the authority of the City Manager.

In May 2018, all the Arizona Republican State Senators voted for Red flag. It failed because the Democrats felt it didn’t go far enough.

Mayor Pro Tem Billie Orr, said “I always do what I felt is best for Prescott,” and lost a lot of sleep over this. “I think we should consider tabling this until there ever is a red flag law in Arizona. So then tell us, Mayor Pro Tem, what happens if it comes to pass? How are you going to sleep then? You have created the perfect storm for those of us living in Prescott. . Arizona’s borders are porous. There are ranch families and single women who want to protect themselves and their property. For them the gun is the great equalizer. Does she not care about Senate Bill 1625 which was introduced on Feb 10 by Democrats which is complete gun confiscation? The bill is a violation of the U.S. Constitution, the AZ Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Governor Ducey introduced a Red Flag law in 2018 and 2019 masquerading as Arizona Safe Schools.. He regarded this as his crown jewel STOP plan — (the Severe Threat Order of Protection). He attended the Arizona GOP annual meeting when he saw the signs “No Red Flag” and was jeered by Republican State Committeemen. I know, because I was one of them. I also know that the Prescott Mayor Pro Tem Orr sat there unmoved.

The Prescott City Council, with the exception of Phil Goode, failed to give a clear message that they believe in the sovereignty of the individual, the state and the nation.
