Prescott Police Participate in Fundraising for Special Olympics

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is the largest grass roots fundraiser for the Special Olympics worldwide. Beginning in mid-April each year, several Olympic-style torches begin their journey from every corner of the State of Arizona headed toward the opening ceremony of the Arizona State Games of the Special Olympics. The torch is relayed along its route by members of law enforcement agencies throughout the state, and is carried by runners or bicyclists and, in some cases, even on horseback.

On Thursday April 28, 2011, after receiving the torch in the evening on Wednesday from Yavapai College Police, members of the Prescott Police Department completed their leg of the Torch Run by riding from the Prescott Police Department to Skull Valley where the torch was handed off to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office to continue its journey. On Friday April 29, 2011, the torch will reach its final destination of Sun Angel Stadium at ASU where many law enforcement officers will participate in the final leg of the Torch Run and will hand the torch to a Special Olympics athlete who will light the caldron declaring the state games open.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is primarily a fundraiser for Special Olympics, but it also helps to bring exposure to Special Olympics and the athletes that participate. Funds raised through these efforts go directly to the athletes and their programs so they do not have to incur any personal costs to participate. Anyone wishing to donate to this very worthy cause can contact Sgt. Amy Bonney at the Prescott Police Department at (928)777-1962. The Prescott Police Department would like to thank all those who have generously supported these efforts through the years.
