Steve Blair Fired By KYCA PDF Print E-mail
Written by Lynne LaMaster
Friday, 04 June 2010 20:58

Steve Blair has been fired by KYCA, due to his comments regarding the new mural on Miller Valley School at the corner of Whipple Street and Miller Valley Road.

councilmanblairBesides being a City Councilman, Steve Blair is also a well-known afternoon talk show host for radio station KYCA. Well, make that "was" because he has been removed from his radio talk show as of today, due to a controversy over the mural painted on Miller Valley School.

The discussion about the mural has been controversial ever since the paint began being brushed on the wall. Now it's a full blown controversy, with statewide and even national media paying attention. Right now, the spotlight is on Blair, who made comments that some interpreted as being racist.

Blair freely expresses his opinions on the radio. Today, after being let go by KYCA, he took the time to talk to Prescott eNews about the situation.

Although today's hot topic appears to be whether or not opposition to the mural is racist, and, by inference, whether or not Blair is racist, there is a history behind the rhetoric. And, as is usually true in all disagreements, it takes both sides to have an argument.

Stay tuned to Prescott eNews as we go back in time a bit, and explore some of the roots of the controversy.

In the meantime, when asked if he would resign as a member of the Prescott City Council, Blair replied, "When my constituents in the city tell me it's time for me to go, and that I'm affecting how the city does its business, I will go. I ran because I wanted to help. If I can no longer do that, I'll step down."

If David Ben Moshe Is Representative of Prescott, I'm Glad I Don't Live There
written by Michelle, July 23, 2010
One of the most racist comments I've seen on any bulletin board in a long time comes from David Ben Mosche (fascinating the Prescott News allows that to stay up). From his name, David Ben Mosche is obviously Jewish. My question is, when did HIS family come to America? Or is it okay for 'white' immigrants to move to the US but not those who are 'brown' and from 'third world countries'. Yuk what a despicable thing to say and what a terrible advertisement for Prescott. He should be ashamed of himself.

Editor's Note: Whoops! You are absolutely right, we certainly did miss a couple of things in that comment. Yikes - thanks for bringing it to our attention. We've edited that comment some.

His personality and perspective still shine through, however, and folks will have to make their own judgment regarding that.

Again, thanks for the comment.

I had a great time in Arizona last year
written by Andrew, June 15, 2010
I am not white but:

I had a great time in Arizona last year. Most of the stops were in small towns and I found everyone I met to be polite, friendly, and hospitable. This included the Sheriff of one of the small towns and the police in general.

One of the people we met was invited to come visit us in BC Canada and subsequently did so. She stayed with us in our home for the entire two weeks and had a great time.

It is sad that people like Steve Blair et. al have managed to give the rest of the world an impression of Arizona that is completely contrary to my experience in that state.
Stop Looking at Steve and look at the real criminal Jack Wilson Howard Mechanic and orginizations like the Mural Mice.
written by Jon, June 12, 2010
Mayor Jack Wilson you have done far worse to sully the reputation of Prescott than what Mr. Blaire has done and yet you did not resign. What about the new table/desk that you bought that cost well over 2 grand, or 911 call for a jaywalker, or the 2050 committee that was just a joke, or here is possibly the biggest one bringing Chicago style politics and ethics to Prescott that were not wanted. People move to Prescott because they enjoy the area and then try to change it to where they came from just like Mayor Wilson did. Sir you are a disgrace to your political party and to everybody that has ever met you. If you care about Prescott so much then get out and quit attacking the people who want to make it a good place to live again. Jack is a criminal for poisoning everybody’s views and I am certain of other things. Heck one of his best friends was Howard Mechanic who had to get a presidential pardon to get off the hook from various things.

I just recently looked into the eyes of a young Mexican-American friend just graduating from high school. I was told that the brother was joining the Marines while she, the Army national guard. I just think Its a disgrace for them to have to listen to the senseless rants of people such as Steve Blair,Glen Beck, and other extreme right wing wackos, while going out to place their young lives on the line for them.

I could not help but compare a true American Hero(Roy Benavidez) actions in defense of our nation, against those who lob senseless hate at innocent children. In my comparison the hate radio jocks come up seriously lacking!
God bless all Americans who stand up for the truth, dignity, and courage that these young lives represent. Thank you all, and God Bless America.- Franco, Military City U.S.A.

The fact will always remain that Blair's comments on his radio show have done immeasurable harm to the reputation of Prescott, because they were in fact racist. He "had to wonder why" a black kid's face was on the mural (because the kid goes to the school), suggested it was because of our black president, and he hates the word diversity.

"I disagree with the whole perspective that you would have a black guy painted on both sides of that building when the history of Prescott never had a culture issue ..."

Steve, the mural has one black kid on one side, and one hispanic kid on the main face (the biggest face)--you erroneously assumed the hispanic kid was black. Those are actual kids who attend the school.

It's an elementary school mural. Repeat: an elementary school mural.

Ten years ago, I lived in Yuma, and my work took me all over Arizona (including Prescott). It's a wonderful, varied state filled with natural beauty and great people from all sorts of backgrounds. I hate to see all the bad press it's been getting, but that's what happens when you let guys like Blair become your face to the world. Unless things have changed, Blair is NOT representative of the people I knew when I was there.

Good for KYCA for giving him the boot, and good for all you Prescott residents who stood up for those kids and their mural. Don't let the door hit you in the backside, Blair, 'cause I think that's where you keep what passes for your brains.

Ummm. What the heck is going on in Arizona? Some of these people really need to get out of the sun. If I’m not mistaken, Arizona was originally inhabited by the Navajo Nation, as well as other people of color that were indigenous to that region. I’d bet a nickel for a million, that modern day Arizona was built with the back-breaking labor of those beautiful people of color. Snap out of it America. Don’t let the shrill voices of a few, speak on behalf of the vast majority in this country that find this garbage repugnant, not to mention Draconian. We’ve witnessed firsthand the damage that ancestor’s of Steve Blair have done to the Navajo Nation. If anyone should be sent packing, it should be Blair, back to what I think would be the United kingdom. Oh wait, the UK is, by and large, a Socialist nation. Where to go. Where to go...

Why do you think the name of your state and the states around it are Spanish in origin? Needless to say, native Americans were there even longer. Many Hispanic families in the Southwest, including Arizona and New Mexico Colorado, Nevada and California, have been there since before they were states. I am a firm believer in free speech. If Mr. Blair had aired his opinions as a private citizen over a beer at Matt's Saloon he certainly has that right. As an elected official, it seems to me that in this day and age a person with even an ounce of intelligence would think at least twice before spewing such ignorant, fear fueled nonsense over the public airwaves. Sure he has the right to speak his mind. The rest of us have the right AND THE RESPONSIBILITY, to make it clear to him and anyone else with similar views that racist attitudes have no place in our public offices. Anywhere.

He wouldn't be related to that other hillbilly yahoo Barbara Blewster would he? She's another racist piece of work that needs to be shipped to the moon. Or Antarctica, nice and white down there...

Oh, and to Bruce, are you trying to say that Blair doesn't have an agenda? My friend, it would be easier to find a Saguaro cactus blooming at the bottom of the sea than an agenda-free politician. And obviously the diversity you speak of would be the right of people to be as racist in public as they want to be? Even as public servants? Probably only if they are White, right? Do you even know what the word diversity means? Feel free to hop on board the ship to Antarctica with Steve and Barbara, you all will really appreciate the 'diversity' there.

written by PrescottAZNonFreak, June 05, 2010
One question for you: What do you think the definition of "racist" is?

I grew up in a tiny, all-white town in Wisconsin. I am very aware that racism is a cultural problem, not something an individual necessarily chooses to avow. Some of us may carry a bit around with us in spite of our intentions not to. If we're lucky, we get opportunities just like this one to think about what "racism" and "diversity" mean. That usually means stepping into the shoes of someone different than we are. Like Mario, the hispanic kid in the mural.

Maybe, that's how it is with Steve. He doesn't MEAN to be a racist.

But, I am sorry. He is a racist.

Do you recall what he said when he and John Hanna had the 2010 US Census banner in Spanish torn down from the Square? How do you explain this:

When The Daily Courier asked about why he was concerned about visitors seeing a sign in Spanish, Blair explained, "It would seem like we're a Spanish community rather than an English community," and most visitors are not Hispanic.

And how about this:

"I have nothing against Spanish people," he said.

When Steve goes out to Maya's or El Charro, does he call those tacos and burritos "Spanish food?"

Look, some people who are racist may not be all bad. But, geez, do you think dealing with that crap might actually help them be ever better?

Wow - and to think that Mecham was once the worst thing to hit Arizona. He's looking mighty tame in comparison. Now it is a whole slew of racists making Arizona look bad. This is not the Arizona I grew up in. This is the Arizona that has been taken over by midwesterners and retirees who bring their fear, loathing, and small minds with them; equally despicable are the politicians who capitalize on that fear of non-white skin with their campaigns of hatred and intolerance. Last time I was home in Phoenix, I had the misfortune of attending a neighborhood party where I was engaged in a conversation with a retired couple from Iowa. They were leaving Phoenix and moving to Prescott because they said there were too many "spics" in Phoenix for their liking. I'm sure they've been ardent listeners of Steve Blair.

I am from West Virginia. We have to deal with our share of stereotypes, so I feel for you in AZ, I really do. That being said, I visited your state not long ago and was impressed with the infrastructure and amenities, particularly certain city and state parks. I was particularly impressed with the caliber of the faculty at one of your state universities, to the degree that I was considering grad school there. At the very least, I would have encouraged my kids to put it on the short list of places to consider attending.

I'm sorry to say that right now, I would be quite hesitant to so much as visit AZ again, much less move there. These "isolated incidents" are starting to become sufficiently common to give me pause as to whether it is the kind of place I want my kids to be. If this is not the image you want to portray to the country and world, do something about your elected officials, from the city level all the way up to the governor's office. These folks appear to be woefully out of touch with the country and the times. I hope the people that elected them do not harbor similar sentiments.

I looked at this mural, and all I saw was a bright, happy child enjoying the outdoors. For Steve Blair to criticize this mural because the child appeared to be an ethnic minority is startling and waaaayyy out of left field. And the fact that he saw this light-colored child as "black" is proof positive that he is hypersensitive about color. Nothing wrong with being African-American, of course; a child of any color is beautiful. It's just that this guy seems to be literally on a campaign against anyone who is not lily white. Apparently, you have to be a pale Caucasian in order to qualify to dominate a mural. Is that right, Steve? What's next, an endorsement for the skinheads? {shudder} I pray that this man stops seeing divisions between the races. We are all the human race and you can find every color of skin from almost totally black to almost totally white, with every gradation of shading in between. No Andy, your pointless rambling anecdote does not prove anything. Blair is racist. Everyone is (at least a little) racist. That is the nature of our society.

But Blair is not racist in just the subconscious way that we are all conditioned to. He is overtly and unabashedly so. Let's look at one of the many stupid and bigoted things he's said:

"To depict the biggest picture on the building as a Black person, I would have to ask the question: Why?"

So, not only does Blair apparently think that all brown people are a homogeneous mass (the 'Black person' in question was actually a HISPANIC boy), he seems to be implying that black people have no place in a Prescott mural, or that they should be small and out of sight rather than the 'biggest picture.'

I could go on at length--his comment about the mural looking like 'L.A. graffiti,' for example, has all kinds of troubling racist undertones--but I hope this proves the point. Blair is a racist. Stop defending him. All it does is make you look worse.

This is the problem with journalism these days, it has the veneer of being neutral but what it actually does is pretend like there's two equally-credible sides, and the debate between them is a completely subjective one that can be left up to the reader's opinion. What ends up happening is that the opinion of racists like Blair ends up being given the same legitimacy and time as the opinions of people who are against racism, and it makes racist thought and speech more acceptable.

That's it, dude. That's about it. Children playing in the wide open spaces.

It would appear to any reasonable person as a celebration of childhood, playfulness and freedom. It shows how much joy and fun there is in childhood and play.

You're an idiot. Shut up. And get the FFFFFF out of MY Country!!!

Steve, I grew up with you, and I should tell you an old Arizona saying: When you're up to your chin in the outhouse pit, shut your mouth. You deserve to lose your public life; go climb under your rock until Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh give you a call. You are a disappoint to the people who grew up here, and to all Arizonans. What happened to you??
