Residents and visitors who want an Arizona Centennial souvenir should visit the Elk’s Opera House sometime between 10 am to 7 pm tomorrow. The U.S. Postal Service will set up a temporary Postal Station at the Elk’s Opera House where a commemorative envelope featuring a picture of the Elk’s Opera House, the Centennial Stamp and a Post Office cancellation will be sold for 2 dollars. The stamp, which was unveiled at the Prescott Best Fest last September, went on sale on Tuesday’s Statehood Day. Proceeds from sales will benefit the Elk’s Performing Arts fund. After the Ghosts of Celebrities Past event at 7 tomorrow night, envelopes will be available in the Elk’s Lobby for 2 dollars and 50 cents..
The City of Prescott and community partners will host a park and trails cleanup effort starting at 8 tomorrow morning. Carescape Landscaping, High Gear Bikes and Adams Automotive will provide 60 volunteers for a clean-up and maintenance effort in Granite Creek Park and along the downtown greenway trails. According to Special Projects Administrator Eric Smith, Carescape approached city officials late last year with an offer to conduct a large scale volunteer project. Smith identified the heavily used park and trails and formulated a plan that directed volunteer crews to rebuild portions of a half mile jogging path, perform trail head repairs, remove hazardous limbs and trees and address other safety related issues.
It will be another 3 game weekend for the Arizona Sundogs. Tonight at 6:05, the Sundogs will take on the Missouri Mavericks for 1 last time this season. The Sundogs and the Mavericks faced off 2 weeks ago as Arizona’s current road trip got underway and the Mavericks won both games. Tomorrow night at 6:05, the Sundogs’ opponent will be the Quad City Mallards. These 2 teams just played last weekend, with the Mallards getting the 4 to 2 win on Saturday and the Sundogs getting the 5 to 2 win on Sunday. This will be the final game this season against the Mallards. On Sunday afternoon at 3:45, the Sundogs will take on the Evansville, Indiana Ice Men for the first time this season. Even though Statehood Day has come and gone, Centennial events will continue. Dolan Ellis, Arizona’s official State Balladeer will perform a special Centennial Concert at the Old Town Center for the Arts on North 5th Street in Cottonwood at 7:30 tonight. On March 3rd at 2 pm, the Sedona Heritage Museum on Jordan Road will host “A Conversation with Governor Hunt,” featuring Don Shields portraying Arizona’s 1st Governor, George W.P. Hunt. Arizona’s official historian Marshall Trimble explains why the Centennial party is continuing on. The 125th edition of the Prescott Frontier Days Rodeo, which runs from June 28th through July 3rd, will focus on historical happenings in and around Prescott and Yavapai County, including ranching and mining.
The Ghosts of Celebrities Past will visit Elk’s Opera House in Prescott at 7 tomorrow night. As part of the 107th anniversary of the Elk’s Opera House, Director Gail Mangham will present a rebirth of the 105th anniversary program, which expands on the promise of the original show when the theater was still under construction 2 years ago. During a live appearance on KQNA’s Talk of the Town Wednesday, spokeswoman Michelle Young described some of the celebrities who are scheduled to return to the stage. Over at the Yavapai College Performance Hall on East Sheldon Street at 6 tomorrow, the 5th annual Valentines for Veterans concert, co-sponsored by Arizona’s Hometown Radio Group, will be held. The featured performer is multi-Grammy winner BJ Thomas.
The world famous Harlem Globetrotters return to Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. The 2012 World Tour is currently underway and the Globetrotters will make a stop at the Center at 2 Sunday afternoon. The team has played more than 20 thousand exhibition basketball games in 118 countries. During a live call-in to Q and A with Sandy Moss on KQNA 1130 AM and 99.9 FM on Wednesday, Globetrotter Cheese Chisolm explained the team has a long history of entertaining fans young and old with athleticism mixed in with comedy. Speaking of basketball, the Center will be hosting the Division 4 Athletic Interscholastic Association Championships this weekend. Boys’ and Girls’ games will be played today and tomorrow before resuming next Thursday. The first round of the tournament was held at Prescott and Bradshaw Mountain High Schools last weekend.
The City of Prescott Sanitation Division won’t pick up residential trash on President’s Day. City spokesman Kim Kapin explains what customers with Monday service need to do in order to get their trash picked up next week.
The City of Prescott Transfer Station will be closed Monday, as will area City and Town Halls, public libraries, schools, Fire Stations and Police Administrative Offices. The President’s Day holiday is also causing the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors to meet on Tuesday morning at 9 rather than on Monday. The meeting, which will include consideration of precinct boundary changes, will be held at the Verde Valley Complex on South 6th Street in Cottonwood.
The Prescott Valley Town Council has some concerns on a budget increase request. Deputy Town Manager Ryan Judy indicated last night Council agreed to provide 1 thousand dollars for the Community Garden in past 2 fiscal years. While that allocation wasn’t fully used that first year, the Garden has already used its 1 thousand dollar allocation this year and representatives are now requesting additional funding to bring the water expenditure up to 2 thousand dollars. Approval is expected to occur next Thursday, but Councilman Rick Anderson explains Garden representatives need to be aware this additional funding is a 1 shot deal only. At the start of the study session, Council heard presentations from the 6 applicants seeking to fill a Council vacancy.
Town Planning and Zoning Commissioner Michael Whiting started last night’s presentations off by telling Council he can give his full attention to the position. Former Councilman Harold Wise indicated he wants to finish off the year that was left on the term he resigned from last year while Mountain Valley Regional Rehabilitation Hospital CEO Jennifer Roel stated she can give time to this position despite her full time job. Walt Nagy, who serves as Secretary-Treasurer of the Stoneridge Homeowners Association Board, explains he took a different approach to his presentation. Other candidates who addressed Council included James Woods and Anthony Morrison. James Soto and Teeni Moreno had applied for the position, but opted out of the process. Council interviews are scheduled for next Thursday.
