The Groom Creek Fire District (GCFD) is saying, "Thanks to our community!"
The Groom Creek Fire District website states in an fuels management update that they have accomplished quite a bit of work, including:
- 82 properties that received the basic service at a cost of $5 per hour (which includes raking pine needles, leaves and other small debris to create a 30' perimeter; using a weed eater to remove dried grass; sweeping pine needles and leaves from rooftop and cleaning pine needles from rain gutters)
- 9 properties had overstory thinning completed
- 18 properties had hazardous fuels treatments completed
As a matter of fact, these services are so requested, the fuels crew is scheduled through April. It is recommended that if homeowners wish to get on the list in anticipation of next fire season, they fill out a form on the website.
Senator Highway Project
The GCFD is also working on the Senator Highway Project, which is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). These efforts include:
- A fire break along Senator Highway
- Better sight visibility of wildlife
- More sun exposure to aid in mitigating ice buildup
They ask for drivers along Senator Highway to be careful of the workers along the side of the road.
Free Wood Chips
Free truckloads of wood chips are available - just fill out the form on this page.
Additional Information
For more information about these projects or any other, the GCFD website is an excellent resource and one of the best Fire Department websites in Yavapai County, even for people who live elsewhere. Links, tips, information, weather and much more can be found at http://www.groomcreek.org.
