Series of closures of up to 15 minutes are expected northbound on I-17

Motorists traveling northbound Interstate 17 at night near Cordes Junction should expect a series of brief closures from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Tuesday (Jan. 31) as crews perform work on the Big Bug Creek Bridge, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Each closure is expected to last up to 15 minutes at a time as crews unload girders that will be used for the new northbound Big Bug Creek Bridge on I-17.

Drivers are encouraged to adjust their travel schedules in order to avoid the closures during those hours or allow extra travel time.

Additionally, the right lane northbound on I-17 will be closed overnight during work hours starting Monday (Jan. 30) through Friday (Feb. 3) from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. but will remain open during daytime work hours.

On Wednesday and Thursday (Feb. 1-2) the left lane southbound on I-17 will be closed from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. as crews perform work in the median.

The work is part of a $50 million project to reconstruct the I-17/SR 69 traffic interchange that is expected to be complete by summer 2013.

The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
