YCSO Assists FBI with Barricaded Suspect Incident in Seligman

The following is a statement issued by FBI Press Information Agent Jennifer Giannola:

FBI Special Agent in Charge, James L. Turgal Jr. and Yavapai County Sheriff Scott Mascher announced that Shawn Rice, age 49, was arrested without incident at approximately 5:30 p.m. in Seligman, Arizona.

Earlier today, FBI agents from the Flagstaff Resident Agency, assisted by the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office and Arizona Department of Public Safety, responded to a scene where Rice had barricaded himself in a residence.

FBI agents negotiated with Rice throughout the day which culminated in his self-surrender to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.

Rice is being held in the Coconino County jail and will make his initial appearance before a U.S. Magistrate in Flagstaff tomorrow at 10 a.m.

For further background information on his charges please contact the FBI Las Vegas Division Media office.

Additional details: Yesterday morning, FBI Agents attempted to serve an arrest warrant for Rice in the 54000 block of N. Sunrise Lane, Seligman. Rice refused to cooperate and barricaded himself inside the home with his wife and 2 children. YCSO SWAT personnel were immediately deployed to provide security pending arrival of an FBI tactical team. Throughout the day, a YCSO deputy was utilized as a negotiator to assist the FBI. The deputy remained a critical link in maintaining communication with Rice who was familiar with the deputy from prior contacts. The effort culminated in the surrender of Rice to YCSO deputies at 5:30 PM. No one was injured during the incident.

Multi agency cooperation played a key role in the successful outcome. Sheriff Mascher, who was on scene during the culmination of the incident, expressed his appreciation for the professional way in which deputies provided critical support to the FBI throughout the day while maintaining security for surrounding residents.

Citizens can contact the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office with information or questions at 928-771-3260 or the YCSO website: www.ycsoaz.gov
