Roughriders Extend Second Half Lead for Third Straight Win

PRESCOTT- The Yavapai College Roughriders won their third game in a row at home on Saturday, October 14th, with a 6-1 victory against Mesa Community College.

David Gandara opened the scoring for the Roughriders in the 20th minute, assisted by Johnny Ramirez. However, the lead would be short-lived as Mesa sent one into the back of the net five minutes later to tie the game.

Yavapai College would swipe momentum back before halftime with a goal from Issac Arellano, assisted by Matthew Jordan.

“It was something that we needed, so going into the second half we can have a better half because we started off slow,” Arellano said.

Once the second half began, Yavapai College would pull away with a goal from Angel Lujan in the 73rd minute and two scores from Alex Guadron in the final ten minutes of the game for the victory.

Following two blowout wins, the closely competitive first-half was a good test for the Roughriders as the regular season nears an end.

“We needed a match like this after coming off a 12-0 and 8-0 games,” Roughriders head coach Michael Pantalione said. “It was a good contest.”

In the victory, Yavapai College scored their 100th goal of the season and broke their own ACCAC record of 95 in 2014.

The Roughriders have two games remaining in the regular season with the team’s final home game at Ken Lindley Field taking place on Tuesday, October 17th, against Arizona Western College at 7 pm. Yavapai College currently sits second in the ACCAC conference while Arizona Western College is fourth in the standings, two games behind the Roughriders.
