CAFMA Achieves Quick Extinguishment of Dewey House Fire

On Thursday, August 24, 2023, at approximately 1:26 p.m., Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA) crews responded to a reported structure fire in the area of Jay Bird Lane in Dewey, Arizona.

Firefighters arrived to find fire engulfing the backside of a mobile home and extending into the living areas. One occupant had safely evacuated the home prior to the arrival of emergency crews.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and remained on scene to perform overhaul. There were no injuries to community members or fire personnel. The homeowner has been displaced; the Arizona Crisis Team (ACT) was called in to assist.

The fire is believed to have started at the back of the residence due to a lithium battery pack in thermal runaway. Put simply, thermal runaway happens when an increase in temperature changes the battery’s conditions in a way that causes a further increase in temperature.

Thermal runaway can be extremely dangerous, so CAFMA would like to remind community members to store lithium batteries in mild, well-ventilated, dry areas out of direct sunlight, exposure to heat sources, and water. Always call 9-1-1 immediately in the event of smoke or fire.

CAFMA would like to thank the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Department, APS, and ACT for their assistance.

  1. I saw the smoke as the wife, and I were heading home from Prescott. Looked like a good knock-down. Glad we didn’t have to face the Lithium Batteries a few years ago. Good job, CAFMA..
