MLK Day Toiletry Drive for Local Homeless Shelters & Veterans

Arizona Serve, an AmeriCorps program of Prescott College, seeks community support for their Toiletry Drive beginning on Monday, January 18th through Friday, January 19th which benefits local unsheltered veterans and homeless shelters in the area.

“The Toiletry Drive is an extension of our Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service,” said Mona Stephens, the AmeriCorps Program Coordinator at Arizona Serve. “We’re excited because it is a simple yet powerful way everyone in the community can rally together to support not only those who have served this country, but those who are in dire need locally.”

All items collected will be divided based on need and donated to US Vets, Prescott Area Shelter Services, and the Coalition for Compassionate Justice during the first week of February. These organizations have expressed a need for the following items in particular: feminine hygiene products, baby wipes, facial wipes, soap, razors, shaving cream, lotion, deodorant, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. However, all donations are greatly appreciated.

“Martin Luther King Jr. said ‘Life’s most persistent and urgent question is…what are you doing for others?’,” said Annie Reifsnyder, Director of Training and Member Experience for Arizona Serve. “With the Toiletry Drive and other service projects we are hosting for MLK Day, everyone has the opportunity to answer that question knowing they have impacted the community. More importantly, they are making a difference in the lives of those most in need.”

In addition to the Toiletry Drive, Arizona Serve is also hosting park clean ups on January 18th at Granite Mountain School, Antelope Park in Prescott Valley, and Chino Valley Community Center park from 1-4pm. There are also “do it yourself” projects including making reusable tee-shirt bags for People Who Care and blankets for Prescott Area Shelter Services taking place throughout the week.

To participate in the Toiletry Drive, drop off all donations at 308 Grove Ave in Prescott. For more information about the Drive or other ways to give back during the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service visit our website or contact Mona Stephens at 602-759-0011.
