Saturday's Fatal Accident on I-17

02 March 2009   K. Shankwitz, AZDPS

dpscarOn Saturday, February 28th, 6:56 p.m., a fatal accident occurred on  Interstate 17 approximately one mile south of Cordes Junction.

A vehicle driven by Israel Ruiz, age 30, of Glendale, AZ, hit a concrete barrier and went across the median into the northbound lanes, coming to rest against a guardrail.  A motorcycle traveling northbound struck the Ruiz vehicle and landed in the high speed lane.   Another northbound vehicle driven by Jessica Vandermarr, age 33, of Camp Verde, struck the driver of the motorcycle, Terry Steven Scully, age 56, who was ejected from his motorcycle and laying in the roadway.  Mr. Scully was deceased at the scene.  A passenger on the motorcycle was admitted to a Phoenix hospital with severe injuries.   No one else was injured in the accident.

Helmets were not in use by the occupants of the motorcycle.  Investigating officers believe a helmet would have lessened the injuries sustained by the passenger.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
