Northpoint Expeditionary Learning Academy students are the only invited student presenters at the Leadership for Equity Forum.

A group of Northpoint Expeditionary Learning Academy students have been invited to address a breakout session during the 2011 Leadership for Equity Forum sponsored by the Equity Alliance at Arizona State University. The students have been working with their instructor Charles Mentken to prepare discussions and information on various aspects of equity from a high school student perspective. They will share personal observations and situations including bullying, gender-bias, classroom issues, peer pressures and many other "real-life" ways that equity is alive in the hallways of their school and others. As they share the experiences, they will also share ways the Expeditionary Learning model has helped them with academic pursuits and personal victories. Their stories will be followed by a question and answer period for the audience to ask about specific situations or school model implementation.

This is particularly unique, as there are no other student presenters on the agenda for the two day conference. Keynote speakers include Juan Sepulveda (Director, White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans), Willis D. Hawley (Professor Emeritus of Education and Public Policy at the University of Maryland) and many other prestigious educators and policy makers from around the USA. Participants will represent all facets of education from the K-12 schools to the colleges and universities as well as politicians and those who study the field of equity based services.

The conference is to be held at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Phoenix. The student session is scheduled for Monday afternoon. More conference information can be found at http://www.equityallianceatasu.org/ea/conference/overview
